There is a choice of legionnaire style sun hats from Sposh and Lion in the Sun both offering UPF 50+ (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) sun protection.
Research has shown that wearing a sun-protective hat substantially reduces the amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching the face, neck, ears and head. These areas are particularly vulnerable because they are most frequently exposed when outdoors and so are common sites for skin damage and skin cancer.
The flap at the back of a legionnaire hat protects the neck and ears while the full brim shades the face. In contrast a baseball cap does not provide protection for the cheeks, ears and back of the neck.
Importantly our legionnaire caps may also be worn in the water. Because they are close fitting and have elastic at the back of the head they will stay on and continue to give sun protection even while swimming.
Since UV light is reflected off water and sand it will still be able to reach the face. It is therefore sensible to supplement the hat's protection with a high-factor, broad-spectrum sunscreen and sunglasses.
