3D Secure

Provides Extra Personal Password Security for Credit and Debit Card Payments

3D Secure is operated by MasterCard and Visa, through your card issuing bank, for both credit and debit cards.  In simple terms 3D Secure requires you to authenticate any online payment using a password that is linked to the card and that has previously been chosen by you.  Think of the password as being like your card's PIN number, but just for online payments, and it should be treated with the same care and kept confidential.

We recommend adopting 3D Secure at the first opportunity because it gives you further security over the possible misuse of your card.  Once 3D Secure has been activated an online purchase cannot then be completed through a 3D secure merchant (like The Beach Factory) without also knowing the password attached to the card (even if all the other card details are known).

How does it work?

If 3D Secure has been activated on a card then The Beach Factory will require the payment to be authenticated.

Once you have completed our checkout process and entered your card details, SAGEPAY's secure payment server automatically opens a small communication window directly to your card issuing bank.  After entering the correct password your card issuing bank confirms the transaction within a few seconds.

Passwords are encrypted in transit and are not disclosed to the merchant or to SAGEPAY. However, the authenticated approval from a card issuing bank provides explicit evidence that the cardholder has authorised the purchase.  For this reason your password must be treated like your card's PIN and never be disclosed to anyone.

If you have not previously initiated the 3D Secure process, your bank will instead present the option to sign up then and there with a password, or to sign up later.  You can also sign up for 3D Secure through the card issuer's website if you prefer.
